Senior center coordinator found her ‘true calling’

HEREABOUTS DIANA BLOWERS

When she became the coordinator of Beavercreek’s Lofino Senior Adult Center, Krissi Fedkow knew she’d found her “true calling.”

For the past five years, she’s been a very visible force behind all that goes on at the center located at 3868 Dayton-Xenia Road in Beavercreek.

It is a center that has about 3,000 active members and is “approaching over 60,000 visits to the center for 2010,” Fedkow said.

She, along with director Lee Dutiel and more than 150 volunteers, keep things hopping at the center from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.

On a daily basis Fedkow can be found chatting with those at the pool tables or at the jigsaw puzzle table, checking to make sure all is going well in the exercise center and giving hugs to those in the great room enjoying a meal or party.

She oversees the center’s many classes, such as the computer classes coming up in January and February for novice computer users wanting to learn to use e-mail, Facebook and search the Internet.

Instead of sitting in her office, Fedkow can usually be found checking up on those playing bridge, euchre, cornhole or dominoes or she’s putting the finishing touches on a special event, like the monthly pizza and game nights or a special trip, such as a recent one to LaComedia Dinner Theatre.

She also oversees the center’s transportation services, which provides members with transportation to and from the center, to destinations around the Beavercreek area and to medical appointments.

“I feel that this is my true calling.  I love it,” she said, noting that her favorite part of the job is “most definitely the people.”

Beavercreek city and township residents, ages 55 and older, pay $30 per year to enjoy the center’s facilities, which includes a library, game room, computer room and fitness center. Non-residents can become members for $45 per year.

After working for several years in the travel industry, Fedkow became the director of senior adult programs at the Xenia YMCA.

“That position led to a (job as) director of activities for the city of Xenia, which I held for two years.
