Senior Helpers an alternative for senior care

The business idea is to provide another option for seniors.

DAYTON — Senior Helpers opened a new office in Dayton in June to help seniors and their families in the Miami Valley.

The idea behind the business, owned by Douglas Dever, is to offer an alternative to long-term nursing homes or assisted living facilities.

Dever said he decided to bring a Senior Helpers to Dayton after working in financing and accounting for many years.

“After my father was diagnosed with and began battling cancer, I realized that great care for a loved one is important, especially at home.”

Through Senior Helpers, caregivers are available nights and during the day to assist families with the care of their loved ones. Services offered include medication reminders and personal care such as walking, grooming and bathing assistance.

Caregivers at Senior Helpers are “caring people” Dever said.

The business also is a family affair. Dever’s son, Nicholas Dever, is office manager. “Nicholas has been great, getting the Dayton office up and running,” Dever said. Dever’s wife, Gena Dever, does the books for the business.

Dever is hoping to add to his staff. Senior Helpers currently has 25 caregivers.

A background in nursing is preferred for those interested in a position, as 70 percent of the caregivers are certified nursing assistants.

The Senior Helpers office is located at 77 Elmwood Drive in Dayton.
