Name released of woman fatally shot at gender-reveal party; suspects, motives sought

Residents in a Cincinnati neighborhood are still trying to make sense of a shooting after a gender-reveal party Saturday night that killed one person and injured eight others.

“It’s normally a quiet neighborhood, nothing goes on, friendly neighbors,” said Patrick Shanley, 30, who lives in the Capstan Drive neighborhood where a shooting occurred after a gender-reveal party Saturday night in Colerain.

He says he was shocked by the shooting. His wife and child were home at the time but did not hear any gunshots, he said.

A Colerain police vehicle was parked today outside the home in the 900 block of Capstan Drive where the shooting occurred.

There have been no arrests at this point and no information has been released on a possible motive.

A 22-year-old woman from Indiana was killed and eight others were injured during a shooting at a gender-reveal party near Cincinnati Saturday night, according to Colerain Twp. police.

Autum Garrett has been identified as the victim who died as a result of gunshot wounds in the incident in the 9900 block of Capstan Drive.

Three children were among the eight others who suffered injuries not considered life-threatening. Police said they are ages 8, 6, and 2. There were other children inside the home who were not injured, according to police.

Police said Garrett had already succumbed to her injuries when first responders arrived on scene. There were more than nine people in the home at the time, but police are not sure of how many.

All those who were injured were in the same room when the shooting happened and all the injuries are from gunshot wounds, according to police.

There have been no arrests at this point and no information was released on a possible motive.

Colerain Twp. Police Chief Mark Denney said in an afternoon press conference that his department does not know if the shooting was random, targeted or intended for someone else.

“I would like nothing more in my position to be able to stand up here and tell the community they have absolutely nothing to worry about but I’m not going to provide statements or information that’s false just to make people feel better,” Denney said.

“We don’t know who the suspects are or why they did this,” he continued. “We would encourage people to take the same precautions they always do, call our police department if there’s anything suspicious, to take reasonable precautions, to keep your house locked and lights on, but we have no information that makes us believe that there’s any specific threat to our community.”

Police continue to look for those responsible for a deadly shooting Saturday night at a gender-reveal party near Cincinnati.

The woman who hosted the party reported she was shot in the leg and lost her unborn baby as a result.

The woman was on crutches and returning to her home where the shooting occurred on Capstan Drive when she was briefly interviewed this morning by our news partner in Cincinnati, WCPO-Ch. 9

Colerain Twp. police are expected to release more information during a press conference at 4:30 p.m.

According to the 9-1-1 records, a male called 9-1-1 from inside the home shortly after it happened.

The caller claimed he was one of the nine people shot and told the dispatcher no one had descriptions of the shooters. “Somebody just came in and shot all of us…” the caller said. “It’s a couple people that got hit. There’s a baby that was shot in the leg, I’m shot. It’s a whole lot of people in here shot.”

The caller told the dispatcher they were watching TV when “they just ran in here and started shooting at everybody.”

Another 9-1-1 caller reported that she attended the party and was sitting in her car when she saw two hooded people enter the home, then a short time later exited and ran away from the house.

A neighbor tells us it was a typically “tranquil” Saturday on Capstan and Hollis drives as people attended an afternoon gender-reveal party that stretched into the night in the Colerain Twp. neighborhood.

That tranquility was shattered around 11:30 p.m. when police responded to shots fired at the home where the party was happening.

Vehicles were parked up and down the block as tables were set up and balloons adorned the backyard of the home where the party occurred, according to the neighbor.

The neighbor tells us she heard what she thought were firecrackers and thought nothing of it because a nearby bar was shooting fireworks that night.

Police tell us a woman was killed and eight people were hurt when one or more persons opened fire at the party.

The victims have not been identified and detectives are working to identify and apprehend the suspects.

UPDATE @ 10 a.m.

A woman who was among the gunshot victims at a gender-reveal party in the Cincinnati area reports she was shot in the leg and lost her unborn baby as a result of what happened, according to a report from our news partner in Cincinnati, WCPO-Ch. 9.

The victim was on crutches when she was briefly interviewed by a WCPO reporter. She had just returned from the hospital to the neighborhood where the shooting occurred in Colerain Twp.

Detectives are pursuing leads in an effort to identify and apprehend one or more shooters, who left one person dead and eight others wounded, including three children, said Jim Love, Colerain Twp. police spokesman.

The victims have not been identified. One adult was listed in critical condition at University of Cincinnati Medical Center and one is in serious condition.

Love said those who fired the shots were able to get away and detectives are working to find them and determine a possible motive for what happened.

A pregnant victim in the shooting has lost her baby after being shot Saturday night, according to WCPO.

A woman is dead and three children are at Cincinnati Children's Hospital with non-life threatening injuries following a shooting in Hamilton County Sunday morning.

One adult is at University of Cincinnati Medical Center in critical condition and another in serious but stable condition, according to hospital staff.

Three others are in stable condition at the hospital with one person reportedly shot in the leg and another in the stomach.

WCPO reports radio logs indicate there may have been two shooters at the gender reveal party held at a home in the 9900 block of Capstan Drive.

Gender reveal parties are held by expectant parents to confirm whether the baby will be a boy or a girl.

Party-goers were reportedly watching a movie at the time of the shooting, according to Colerain police public information officer Jim Love.

Love said no suspects are in custody, but detectives are currently following leads. It is unknown if the children were the target of the shooting.

Our news partner WCPO reports at least nine people were shot while watching a movie at a gender reveal party, where expectant parents reveal whether the baby will be a boy or a girl.

The three injured children have been taken to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, according to Colerain police, while the remaining surviving victims are recovering at University of Cincinnati Medical Center. The extent of their injuries are unknown at this time.

An adult was killed and multiple children injured when a shooting broke out at a Capstan Avenue home in Hamilton County, according to police.

Colerain police said adults and children at the house were watching a movie when the shooting took place in the 9900 block of Capstan Avenue, just north of Northgate Mall.

Homicide detectives are at the scene investigating.

INITIAL REPORT

Seven people have been shot and one person is dead following a Saturday night shooting in Colerain Twp., Hamilton County, according to our Cincinnati news partner WCPO.

Police were dispatched to the shooting in the 9900 block of Capstan Avenue near Northgate Mall around 11:30 p.m.

WCPO reports the shooting is one of the largest mass shootings reported in the area in recent years.

Police have not released further details.
