Snow melt, additional rain causing flood concerns along area rivers

The snow melt the Miami Valley had over the last week and the additional rain forecast for the area the coming days has local experts watching the river levels closely.

“That rain has got nowhere to go but runoff to rivers and streams because the ground's saturated and it's not going to soak up any more,” said Mike Ekberg with the Miami Conservancy District.

The conservancy district said Wednesday morning that the Englewood Dam was already temporarily storing floodwaters before the rain even started late Tuesday.  It was the only one of the district’s five dams to be storing floodwaters, a spokesperson said.

“We've had snow melting for a number of days now. I think the snow-water equivalent of the pack several days ago was somewhere between point-three, point-five inches,” Ekberg said.  “That is all running off that's become flow in the river.”

A flood watch has been issued for the Miami Valley through Friday morning, with periods of rain expected across the area over the next few days.

Thursday could see some of the heaviest rain falling during the late afternoon and evening.

The area was already seeing flooding in parts of Greene County, including Factory Road in Beavercreek Twp. and Ohio 725 in Sugarcreek Twp.
