Society to repair log house

EATON — Keith Marshall of Wood-Mizer Mill and his chain-saw with attached shingle maker buzzes with activity at the Preble County Historical Center.

The pioneer spirit has motivated the Historical Society to saw shingles from white oak trees on society property to make shingles for the 1813 Lewisburg Log House on the center’s property at 7693 Swartsel Road. A wood shingle roof put on in 1975 by volunteers has deteriorated.

Records show the log house was built in 1813 for Henry Horn, who founded Lewisburg in 1818, by his son-in-law. The log house used to be located south of Lewisburg fire house department. In 1975, the cabin stood in the way of a new emergency squad building and parking area.

“The village sold the structure to the Historical Society so the early village log house could be moved and preserved,” said Jane Lightner, PCHS executive director.

“Although the wood shakes are being made from white oak trees harvested on society property, there are still materials which will need to be purchased to make all of the needed repairs,” Lightner said. “We are seeking donations to pay for those supplies.”
