Space heater likely cause of Dayton fire

Space heater safety tips

  • When buying a space heater, look for one that carries the mark of a nationally-recognized testing laboratory, and has a wire grill or other protection around the heating element.
  • Keep a 3-foot clearance between space heaters and anything that can burn.
  • Place the heater on a level surface, out of any area where people might trip over or bump into it.
  • Extension cords are not recommended, but if you must use one, make sure it is a heavy-duty cord marked with a No. 14 gauge or larger wire. Never run any cord under rugs or carpeting, and make sure cords are in good condition.
  • Do not leave the heater in use while sleeping or any time when it is unattended.
  • Do not use an electric heater as a dryer by placing clothing over it. Never use a heater to thaw pipes.

DAYTON — Fire destroyed a home at 1033 Cherry Drive, a few blocks east of Good Samaritan Hospital, late Sunday night, Dec. 27.

Dayton Fire Lt. Joe Renacs said the blaze is still under investigation, but fire officials believe it was caused by a space heater.

Crews were called to the home at 11:47 p.m. Sunday. Renacs said there were no injuries, but the fire was so intense that crews had to take a defensive approach and contain the blaze from outside. Only a few beams remained across much of the second floor.
