According to a statement released by the Indiana State Police for the police department, two officers in an unmarked Suburban pulled into the lot of the Village Pantry, 1524 University Ave., at about 2 p.m. as part of an ongoing investigation.
An unidentified suspect was sitting in a parked Pontiac Bonneville and began firing through the windshield at the officer's vehicle.
The driver, Officer Brent Brown, a 10-year veteran, was hit in the shoulder. His vest blocked the bullet and he was treated and released at the scene.
Baugh was shot in the face and taken to a hospital where he was in stable condition.
The officers returned fire and struck the suspect an unknown number of times. He was pronounced dead at Ball Memorial Hospital.
Officials said the suspect was believed to be involved in a recent store robbery in town.
BSU alerted students and staff during the incident and sent an email once the incident ended, according to BSU students.
A public safety notice emailed to students said, "at no time was there a threat to the university community."
