Teen Miss Black Ohio has a million reasons to smile

Aunjanná Million is one high school student who never stops. The 15-year-old wears many hats through her involvement in student council, her church, cheerleading, varsity soccer and track and as a youth soccer coach.

But now she also wears a crown atop her head as Miss Black Ohio USA Talented Teen. The Middletown High School student — who was crowned the first-ever Miss Butler County Outstanding Teen in 2007 during the Miss Hamilton pageant — will now represent the state at the national competition held next year in Washington, D.C.

“I was utterly shocked,” Million said. “I was so nervous the entire time. I just thanked God. I was so happy I just stood there for the longest time just crying.”

Million won the title last month in Columbus, showing she excels at academics, public speaking, volunteering and having goals for the future.

“She is not only stunning on the outside, she is just as beautiful on the inside,” said Margaret Neu, who taught Million for two years at Central Academy in Middletown.

Vanessa King, Miss Black Ohio USA Talented Teen director and board chairwoman said judges look for a teenager who demonstrates volunteerism, speaking skills and academic excellence.

“Basically, we were looking for someone who was not afraid to get up there and speak in public. A lot of their score is based on their speaking skills,” King said, adding that contestants serve as “an example to other young ladies to let them know there are opportunities out there for them to get help with their education.”

As part of her platform of teen abstinence, volunteerism and higher education, Million plans to be a mentor to students at Middletown’s Amanda Elementary School, where her mother works.

Million hopes to attend Ohio State University after graduation and plans to become a lawyer.
