Teens allegedly rob Madison Twp. bait store

Both jumped into the Great Miami River to avoid capture.

Two teens are in custody for allegedly robbing a Madison Twp. store before jumping into the Great Miami River in a getaway attempt.

The duo entered the Go Fish Bait and Tackle shop on Trenton-Franklin Road at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday. One of the suspects showed a handgun and demanded money before fleeing the store with the accomplice, according to the Butler County Sheriff’s Office.

The suspects ran north along Trenton-Franklin Road in a wooded area near the river. Law enforcement from the Middletown Police Department and the sheriff’s office sealed off the perimeter and located the boys.

When a police dog closed in on the suspects, both teens jumped into the river. One immediately surrendered, but the other did not.

“He wasn’t going to give up,” said Lt. Mike Craft.

Sgt. Rob Whitlock went into the river and took the boy into custody without incident.

The suspects, both 17-years-old, were taken to the Middletown Police Department for questioning.

The incident remains under investigation.
