Larry Lain, adviser of the paper since 1987, said, “the Flyer News still maintains the same values and traditions that it started with.”
Lain added, “The paper has always been improving, and there’s been a growing sense of professionalism.”
Forgoing its regular format this week, the school newspaper filled its 16 pages with reprints of some of the publication’s top stories through the years.
Kelsey Cano, the current editor in chief, and members of the staff selected the stories.
From Volume 19, Number 39, 1969: “Late Monday afternoon Kevin Keefe received his notice to report for immediate induction into the U.S. Army. Keefe left 20 minutes after receiving the letter from the hands of Fr. Charlie Lees, provost.
“Since Keefe had already been sworn in as president of the student body, the new Congress met in emergency session last night to administer the oath of office to Ed Barrett, former executive vice president.”
Volume 35, a special edition, 1988: “St. Joseph’s Hall, a 103-year-old campus landmark caught on fire. The departments of communications and sociology were among those buildings in the fire. No one was injured and the building will be rebuilt.”
Volume 38. No. 23, 1991: “Close to 900 gathered outside the Kennedy Union Plaza after it was announced the United States was officially engaged in war with Iraq. Demonstrators stood in the rain, occasionally embracing each other, held candles, and signs and sang ‘All we are saying is give peace a chance.’ ”
Volume 48. No. 21. 2001: “An early morning fire on Dec. 10 in 2001 on Stonemill Road took the life of a student. Officials ruled it a case of arson and involuntary homicide.”
Volume 39. No. 35, 1992: “A St. Patrick’s Day weekend party, primarily on Lowes Street in the Ghetto erupted into a scene of chaos and destruction. Seven students were arrested for disorderly conduct.”
Through the years, there were a number of stories about outstanding performers and artists who visited campus, fundraising activities among the students and success stories of both students and alumni. Of course, there were countless stories about UD’s successful sports programs.
And when he was a senior at UD, back in 1989, Jon Husted, a member of the Ohio Senate and a former Speaker of the House of Representatives in Columbus, was the subject of one of his first newspaper profiles.
The Flyer News reported that Husted shared his campus living space with a tarantula named Charlotte.
