The Hen’s Nest wants people to feel at home

Jody Moore thinks The Hen’s Nest has continued to thrive for a quarter century because it’s a fun place.

“It is just a friendly little shop,” Moore said of the downtown business that last week celebrated with a 25th anniversary open house.

Moore has been with the business since its 1988 opening when she and her handmade baskets joined forces with another woman to take advantage of the vacant space at 50 N. Miami St.

The first co-owner left after a few months for a new home in Florida, leaving Moore, then working full time at General Motors, and her father running the store.

Two new partners, Sally Blue and Susie Spitler, joined after a time for an expanded store name of Reflections, The Hen’s Nest and Village Treasures. Spitler moved to Michigan for a while with her husband’s job, while Blue retired around 15 years ago, leaving The Hen’s Nest to return to its roots.

“It has just been me plugging along ever since. We’ve really evolved a lot,” Moore said, adding the business offerings today probably are a bit more country than in the past.

She’s seen businesses come and go in the village. Today’s offerings including more stores and restaurants are bringing people into town.

“People can walk to the stores and can eat. We get more visitors. Is amazing how many people come through,” she said.

The mother-daughter team of Joy Paulus and Dawn Jay, described by Moore as “my right hand ladies,” help keep the shop running.

A surprising attraction is the building’s bathroom, decorated to resemble a small log cabin.

“A woman came in earlier today and said, ‘I brought my friends to see your bathroom,’” Moore said with a laugh. “It is always fun in here. People like to have a good time.”

What the business offers that makes it stand out: "It is hard to be different, but I do try to be as different as I can," Moore said. " I do a lot of special ordering for people. If someone is looking for something special, I will work to get."

How to contact the business: The store's hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The phone number is (937) 698-6985.
