TROY — Fees for vehicle titles are changing Wednesday, July 1, for the first time in 16 years.

Those visiting the county title office, a division of the county Clerk of Courts, will find the fee increased to $15 from $5 for the following:

• Certificate of title to motor vehicle, watercraft, outboard motor and off-highway motorcycle or all-purpose vehicle

• Duplicate certificate of title

• Memorandum certificate of title if after original title issued

• Lien noted on certificate of title if after original title issued

Jan Mottinger, Miami County’s clerk of courts, said even with the adjustment, Ohio’s title fees remain among the lowest in the country. Plus, he said, Ohio is one of the few states where consumers receive their titles on the same day.

Of the $15 fee, $11.50 stays local to cover operating costs. The other $3.50 goes to the state.

Miami County’s title office, located at the One Stop Shop on Experiment Farm Road in Troy, employs seven people.

Income from title fees has been on the decline. Last year it was $299,375 compared to $396,192 in 2004. Titles sold so far this year are down by 2,500 compared to the same period in 2008, Mottinger said.

Anyone with questions can contact Mottinger’s office on the third floor of the county Safety Building in Troy or call (937) 440-6010.
