The kickoff to the city’s 175th anniversary celebration July 3 will take residents to the days before cars filled downtown streets.
“We have some really cool things going on,” said Matt Owen, a member of the Tipp City council and the 175th anniversary planning committee that’s put together activities for July 3-4.
The Friday, July 3, events will feature several equestrian acts on Main Street downtown beginning at 5 p.m. The Saturday, July 4, events will kick off with a 4 p.m. parade followed by an evening of activities at City Park culminating in the fireworks display.
The July 3 activities are designed to turn the city’s historic downtown into what it may have been like in the mid-1800s.
The 4 Freedom Equestrian Team, formed to honor those who serve or have served in the armed forces, will open the program, followed by The Legends Posse of historical characters on horseback. Other participants will be the Ohio Valley Carriage Club featuring 1800-era carriages, the Faustman Ranch with lasso and other demonstrations and a presidential carriage used by Theodore Roosevelt.
Among other activities will be a city historical narrative, dedication of the Kyle Park horse trails and wagon rides downtown. The traditional downtown Community Night musical activities will get under way at 7:15 p.m.
The July 4 activities at the park will be more modern day, Owen said, with an emphasis on fun and family.
Activities will include food, games and music with vendors including local nonprofits, civic groups and businesses. Music will be by The Brothers & Co. at 5 p.m. and Beesly, a band of Tippecanoe High School graduates, beginning at 7:45 p.m.
The celebration is being paid for with donations from the city, foundations and individuals. The goal is to help people avoid costs beyond what they might buy from the food vendors, Owen said.
