Transformer problem sparks Monroe fire

MONROE— A transformer problem likely contributed to a building fire in Monore that lasted into Saturday.

At 9:44 p.m. Friday, Monroe fire units were dispatched to 920 Deneen Ave., where crews had noted a transformer was on fire in the rear of the building, and that fire extended into the structure, according to the fire department.

Mutual aid was dispatched from Middletown, Liberty Twp., Deerfield Twp. Mason, Franklin and the Butler County Emergency Management Agency. Fire suppression was difficult at first due to the live transformer burning in the back of the building. Crews made entry to the structure and knocked down the fire, and a crew from Duke Energy disabled power to the transformer.

There were no injuries. Damage estimates were being evaluated. The cause of the fire was attributed to an electrical issue, likely related to Friday’s storm, the department said.
