KETTERING — Jim Trent, president of the Kettering Board of Education, is expected to come home from rehabilitation this week after undergoing brain surgery to remove a blood clot, his wife said.
Pat Trent said her 76-year-old husband suffered the injury when he fell down a flight of stairs while they were on vacation in West Virginia on Aug. 2.
The severity of his injury went undetected until Sept. 8, when — after he complained of pain — doctors discovered the bleeding, she said. He had brain surgery that same day at Miami Valley Hospital.
“He had slow bleeding and a clot formed on his brain,” she said after their initial visit to Miami Valley Hospital’s south campus.
Today, she said her husband of 50 years is “doing wonderful,” adding he is optimistic about his recovery since his in-patient rehab is coming to an end.
Pat Trent said after her husband’s fall, he was seen by a neurosurgeon in Charleston, W. Va., who told the couple there was some bleeding on the brain, and he thought the injury might heal itself.
The couple returned home on Aug. 5, and Trent appeared to be fine until a few days before Sept. 7, Pat Trent said.
Jim Trent started having headaches four days before the Holiday at Home Parade, though he did participate in it. He was also having problems with his right leg and gripping onto things, she said.
The couple went to Miami Valley’s south campus assuming all Jim Trent would need was some medicine. Instead, he was rushed to Miami Valley for brain surgery.
Trent has been recuperating at Miami Valley Hospital’s Rehabilitation Center.
Trent, who is the district’s former superintendent, has been a board member for 12 years and its president for the past 10 years. His term expires in 2011.
