Troy teen unconscious in hospital after moped crash

STAUNTON TWP., Miami County — A 15-year-old Piqua boy remained in critical condition at Children’s Medical Center of Dayton today, May 15, nine hours after he was struck by a vehicle while riding a moped outside Troy.

Cory Monnin, 15, was unconscious several hours after the crash reported about 1:10 p.m., according to Deputy Josh Adkins of the Miami County Sheriff’s Office.

Monnin, who was wearing a helmet, was northbound on Troy-Sidney Road near Peterson Road when a car, driven by a 21-year-old Troy man trying to pass the moped in a no-passing zone, hit Monnin as he turned into a driveway.

On Saturday, no charges had been filed and the Troy man remained free, Adkins said.

After the crash, Monnin was flown by helicopter to Dayton Children’s with injuries including head trauma, Adkins said.

He remained in critical condition at 10 a.m. Sunday, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
