Vandalia to split cost of fireworks display

It will cost $26,000 to produce this year’s July 3 Star Spangled Celebration on the grounds of the Vandalia Rec Center.

But with sponsorship money and a split of the leftover costs with Butler Township, the city and township should each inherit a bill for less than $7,000.

For the second straight year, Fifth Third Bank will be lead sponsor at $5,000. In the past, the three Vandalia auto dealerships – Beau Townsend Ford, Joseph Toyota and Smedley’s Chevrolet – each pledged $2,000. The Ohio National Guard also has been a big sponsor, while also setting up a family entertainment center before the fireworks begin.

Sponsorships other than Fifth Third’s have not yet been solidified for this year, but council expects them to be about the same.

“Because of the economy, the city council voted to not have fireworks in 2004,” said Vandalia spokesperson Rich Hopkins. “In 2005, it was decided to seek out sponsorships.”

IAMS was the first sponsor, then other sponsors moved in and out. City manager Rob Anderson also said costs are down a little because Vandalia will run its fireworks on the night of July 3 instead of on July 4.

Vandalia has used Rozzi Famous Fireworks of Loveland since 1992 for the display.
