Welcomers’ Club a social outlet for area women

WEST CHESTER TWP. — Book studies, walking groups, golf leagues, card clubs, movie nights and wine tastings — the list of activities offered by the Welcomers’ Club of Northern Cincinnati could keep a woman busy practically every day of the week.

“Basically, we are a social group that loves meeting new people, doing new things and having a good time,” President Linda Klein of Mason said.

The goal is to help women who are new to the area, or who have lived here a while, to meet others with similar interests.

The 138 members range in age from 40s to late 90s, and while most of the events are targeted at women, there also are couples’ activities.

“When you move from a different city and you’re middle-aged or an empty nester, it’s hard to meet people when you aren’t working or don’t have children” Klein said. “There’s a great void there, and this is where we come in.”

The club meets the second Tuesday of the month at either the West Chester Presbyterian Church or The Barrington of West Chester, but its most popular activity is the Lunch Bunch, which meets the first Thursday of every month at a different restaurant.

“Nobody can say there’s nothing to do,” publicity chair Sharon Foote of Liberty Twp. said.

People can join at any time, and dues are collected to cover the cost of printing a newsletter, which is filled with pages of upcoming activities. At the end of each year, the group donates other funds it has raised to local charities.

“I worked for a long time,” said social chair Sandy Petsch of West Chester Twp. “I don’t have any children, so it was really hard for me to meet people in the area that I lived.”

Now, she said, she attends two to three activities a week.

“We have a large variety of activities, so we have something for almost everybody,” she said. “And, the people are so friendly.”
