West Carrollton to host jobs fair

More than 100 jobs are expected to be available.

The City of West Carrollton is working with local employers to help them find workers to fill more than 100 jobs, including some in city government and the schools.

Some employers have been looking to fill jobs for the past couple of years, Tom Ross, the city’s economic development director, said. He described the inability to fill open positions a “building problem.”

“It’s a major problem throughout the state of Ohio,” Ross said. “There are hundreds of thousands of jobs that are unfilled right now.”

More than 100 jobs will be open for applicants at the West Carrollton Jobs Fair. The jobs fair is set for Aug. 1 at the West Carrollton YMCA, 900 S. Alex Rd., from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Employers attending include: CB Manufacturing, City of West Carrollton, Corbus, LLC, Dayton Progress Corp., Jena Tool Manufacturing Group, Precision Gage & Tool, Co., Prime Time Party Rental, UPS, Crown Cork and Seal Co., Veolia Environmental Services and West Carrollton City Schools.

A broad range of positions will be open for application, said Erika Mattingly, public relations coordinator for West Carrollton.

The jobless rate in Montgomery County in May was 4.9 percent, according to the Ohio Labor Market Information website. The national unemployment rate in May was 5.5 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Jena Tools human resource representative Lisa Kleinschmidt said her company got involved with the jobs fair to find good candidates to fill jobs.

“We’re always looking for qualified candidates and we’re having a little bit of trouble finding them,” she said.

Ross said the jobs fair should also help citizens of West Carrollton find work at a one-stop shop of employers who are looking to hire.

“Part of the struggle for people who are unemployed is they just give up,” Ross said. “It’s tough as an individual to find jobs.”
