The university is trying to rebound from years of financial difficulties and enrollment declines. Higher enrollment means more tuition dollars and gives the school a chance to start correcting its financial issues.
News Center 7's Malik Perkins talked to students to see how they feel it will affect their life on campus, and some say it'll be a boost to the campus atmosphere.
“I didn’t expect that many freshman like that,” said Joshua Spears, Wilberforce student.
“It makes the school like okay we got more people here. I felt last semester we didn’t have that many. It makes the school a lot bigger,” Spears continued.
Other students say the rise in enrollment will make events on campus more fun.
“We haven’t had any activities yet but I feel like when there are basketball games it will,” said Treasure Tate, another Wilberforce student.
At its peak, Wilberforce University had roughly 1,500 students enrolled, and since the university is no longer considering selling some of its property, the school hopes to be back to that level within five years.
