Women’s Hall of Fame to induct 4

Four women will be inducted into the Greene County Women’s Hall of Fame at the 36th annual recognition day luncheon on Sept. 24.

The public is invited to attend the luncheon, at the Walnut Grove Country Club, 5050 Linden Ave., Riverside.

Reservations are $20 and must be paid in advance by Sept. 16. Note on your check if you prefer the vegetarian option for lunch. Checks payable to the Greene County Women’s Hall of Fame should be mailed to Box 703, Fairborn, OH 45324.

The 2016 hall of fame inductees include:

Sharon Busch of Beavercreek, for her efforts as a music educator.

For 36 years, Busch taught choir at the elementary, junior high/middle school and high school levels in the Beavercreek School District and introduced show choir at both the middle schools.

During her tenure at Beavercreek schools her show choirs earned many grand champion and caption awards as well as Superior I ratings both at district and state Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) competitions. Her choirs have been selected to perform at the World Fair, Opryland and Disney World.

In 1990 Busch was Teacher of the Year in Beavercreek Schools.

She also worked with the University of Dayton annual Honor Choir, and is an OMEA conference presenter and clinician

Ann Lewis Cooper of Beavercreek, for her endeavors in aviation and writing.

As a pilot and flight instructor Lewis Cooper accrued over 2000 flight hours in her career.

In 1982 she gave up flying to care for her seriously ill mother but continued to pursue her love of aviation through writing, authoring 100 magazine articles on flying and 11 books. She also worked as the editor for The American Society of Aviation Artists.

Two of her books are “Tuskegee’s Heroes,” illustrated by Tuskegee Airman Roy LaGrone, and “War in Pacific Skies,” a collaboration with her husband, Maj. Gen. Charles S. Cooper III USAF (Ret.).

In 2010 Lewis Cooper was named the Women in Aviation International Volunteer.

Sue Rytel of Fairborn, for her endeavors as an environmental volunteer.

Rytel has been an active volunteer with the Beaver Creek Wetlands Association for over 13 years, where she currently serves as their vice president. She is responsible for design and publication of their newsletter, participates in volunteer land management projects, and has developed many programs and hikes.

Rytel also volunteers with the Food and Farming Team of the B-W Greenway Community Land Trust, which helps to protect wetlands in Clark and Greene Counties

Gerry Shambaugh of Xenia — for her endeavors as a community volunteer for over 45 years.

Shambaugh helped cook for and feed the homeless through organizations such as Heart for the Homeless in Dayton and through Helping Hands. She has been instrumental in the establishment of numerous benefit programs raising money for clothes, food and even medical expenses for those in need. She and her husband Roger collect donations and put together Christmas baskets of food and gifts, even providing bedding and other needs for families who may be experiencing hard times. In the past, they provided Christmas parties for the children at the OSSO (Ohio Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Orphans’) Home in Xenia.
