WYSO alum nominated for Oscar


MORE DAYTON NATIVES UP FOR AWARDS

Three Dayton-area natives are up for Grammy nominations:

The locally filmed drama "Carol" is up for six Academy Awards.

A former WYSO program director is up for a 2016 Oscar.

Randy Thom, director of sound design for Skywalker Sound, is one of four sound engineers whose work on "The Revenant" has earned a "Best Sound Mixing" nomination for the 88th annual Academy Awards.

He was also nominated for a 2016 British Academy of Film and Television Award (BAFTA) for his work on "The Revenant" for "Best Sound."

Thom was program director for the Antioch College-based NPR affiliate WYSO 91.3FM before transitioning to film. He has previously won two Academy Awards — in 1984 for "Best Sound" on "The Right Stuff" and in 2005 for "Best Sound Editing" for "The Incredibles."

"The Revenant" nomination marks his 15th Oscar nomination, having been nominated for his work in sound mixing and editing on films including "Ratatouille," "Forrest Gump," "The Polar Express" and "Return of the Jedi."

The 88th annual Academy Awards will air Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. on ABC.
