Man Sentenced For Part In Deadly Potato Gun Explosion

A second man was sentenced for his part in a fatal potato gun explosion last June in Champaign County.

On Tuesday, Jason Anderson, 22, of Marysville, pleaded guilty to negligent assault. Anderson faced a maximum of 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.

Authorities said June 24 started as a day of fun for friends who had gathered at a Cable Road home in Champaign County. But shortly before 11 p.m. 21-year-old Kyle Thompson, of Union County, was killed when a potato gun exploded.

Anderson is facing up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine. Authorities said the victim's family urged prosecutors not to file criminal charges against Anderson, fearing that the charges could damage is chances of becoming a school guidance counselor in the future.

On Tuesday, prosecutors recommended community service as a punishment. A judge sentenced Anderson to perform community service and suspended a 60-day jail sentence. He was also ordered to pay a $150 fine and court costs.

Anderson must perform the community service by the end of the year.
