Marriot Expects To Invest $5 Million With New Hotel

The Marriot hotel chain is expecting to invest $5 million into the city of Dayton when they build a Courtyard Marriot near the University of Dayton Arena.

In exchange for the investment, Dayton may give the Marriot a huge tax break. On Wednesday night, city commissioners will be talking about whether to give the Marriot a 75 percent tax abatement for building the new hotel.

That has some Dayton residents surprised. Lenard Paul said he does not get a tax break and is forced to pay taxes on everything he does. Why should businesses be exempt?

Dayton city staffers said sometimes you have to give in order to get. In this case, Dayton plans to get business by giving the Marriot a 75 percent tax break for 10 years for building the new hotel.

The new hotel is going to be built across the street for UD Arena near UD's new sports complex. It will be the first new hotel in Dayton in the last 20 years and is something the city is excited about it.

The 4-story, $5 million hotel will also bring more jobs to Dayton. The hotel chain expects to hire 30 people once the hotel is built.

Officials envision the area around UD Arena and the new hotel to be booming someday.
