Memorial Dedicated In 2005 Fatal Oxford Fire

A memorial to three Miami University students killed in a 2005 fire has been dedicated at the southwest Ohio campus.

Julia Turnbull of Milford and Kathryn Welling of Bronxville, New York, were guests at the off-campus house and died of carbon monoxide and smoke inhalation in separate, second-floor bedrooms.

Stephen Smith of Bethesda, Maryland, died from inhaling superheated air as he tried to escape.

Tuesday's dedication of a boulder bearing a plaque brought together family, friends and classmates. Smith's mother told a crowd of several dozen that his death had changed the family on an "almost atomic" level.

Officials said the fire started when smoking materials came in contact with a first-floor couch.
