Miami County Emergency Telephone Notification System Implemented

A countywide telephone notification alert, called the Miami County Emergency Notification System, became fully operational on Thursday following months of planning and installation at the Miami County 911 Center in Troy.

In the event of a significant emergency, weather event, or other catastrophe, citizens of Miami County can be alerted by telephone with information or instructions, according to 911 director Mike King.

"The system," said King, "can complete 100,000 calls in 20 minutes."

At this time, the telephone contact database is limited to publicly published wireline (traditional phone service) numbers only, said King.

Residents of Miami County with cell phones and digital phone systems through Time-Warner Cable will need to provide 911 with their telephone numbers.

That can be done by accessing www.miamicounty911.com and clicking on Emergency Notification Sign-Up.

A resident is not limited to the number of telephone numbers that can be entered for notification.

The county used $70,000 in federal Homeland Security money to pay for the notification system.
