Middletown's Manchester Inn is no more

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (AP) -- A hotel known for hosting prominent politicians and celebrities has closed after 89 years.

The Manchester Inn & Conference Center shut down Monday after years of financial problems. Negotiations are under way for it to become home of Cincinnati State College's hospitality program and culinary school. Local officials are trying to acquire the property in Middletown for use by the college.

The Middletown Journal reports future presidents John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan, Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev, pop music's the Temptations and basketball coach Bobby Knight were among many well-known guests. In 2008, then-Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin stayed at the hotel secretly the night before she was introduced as John McCain's Republican running mate.
