Ohio VA chief focus of federal probe

WCPO in Cincinnati says Jack Hetrick has been removed from oversight of the city’s VA center, continues to oversee Dayton and other VAs around Ohio.

The head of Ohio's regional network of U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals based in Cincinnati is under investigations by both the VA and the agency's inspector general, WCPO reported Saturday.

The station reports that Jack Hetrick has been removed from oversight of the Cincinnati VA Medical Center pending the investigations, which the station claims were prompted by questions from WCPO and its Scripps Washington Bureau.

Hetrick continues to have oversight of the Dayton VA medical center and hospitals and clinics across Ohio. The I-Team reported in 2014 that Hetrick received a $12,579 bonus on top of his $181,497 salary. That story revealed large bonuses going to VA employees amid concerns about veterans facing long – and hidden – waits for care.

WCPO has not revealed the details of its ongoing investigation, which it says began in October with "several issues raised by dozens of whistleblowers."

"The Scripps team briefed agency officials on evidence of potentially inappropriate conduct involving a high-ranking official at the Cincinnati hospital, regional network director Jack Hetrick and one of Hetrick's family members," the station reported.

Previous Ohio VA officials found to have committed misdeeds includes former Dayton and Cleveland VA director William Montague, who is still awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty in 2014 to accepting bribes from a Virginia businessman whom he helped get VA business.
