A UPS employee had more than 20,000 rounds of handgun and rifle ammunition and had texted about planning a mass shooting at a UPS facility, Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety said.

The facility is in Sunnyvale, near San Jose, California, NBC News reported.

CNN reported Thomas Andrews has been arrested, charged with criminal threats, evading police and several counts of weapons violations.

Police started investigating after a tip that Andrews sent the texts saying he was planning a shooting. They found that he had a rifle and four handguns registered.

When they found him, he fled, but eventually, police caught him.

A search of his home turned up not only the ammunition but also high-capacity magazines, five tactical style rifles, a shotgun, three handguns and body armor.

Police also said they found backpacks full of ammunition sitting at Andrews' apartment's front door, CNN reported.

"I definitely think we avoided a tragedy," Police Capt. Dan Pistor told The Associated Press.

Police said Andrews was angry with his employer, the AP reported.
