As most of the country is worrying about COVID-19, or coronavirus, some families are dealing with this year’s flu outbreak.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a majority of states have a high activity level of the flu.

One patient, a child from Iowa, is still recovering from the side effects of the flu.

Jade DeLucia didn't have the flu shot this year and developed the illness just before Christmas. On Christmas Eve, she developed a high fever, CNN reported.

She had a seizure at her local hospital so she was taken to a children’s hospital in Iowa City. That’s where doctors told Jade’s parents that she had suffered brain damage from the flu.

"They said our child might not ever wake up, and if she did, she might not ever be the same," Amanda Phillips, Jade's mother, told CNN in January.

Days after she was admitted, Jade smiled. She eventually recovered, but she had one side effect from the illness: She couldn't see. The flu affected the part of her brain that controls vision and doctors told her family that the 4-year-old may never regain her sight, CNN reported.

But recently, the family noticed something. Jade was able to navigate their home, walking to the bathroom without using the walls to guide her path.

Family members even asked the girl where her uncle was, and she walked to him, Phillips told CNN, saying the regaining of her daughter's eyesight was almost instant.
