New Miamisburg pub sets opening date

Bennett’s Publical Family Sports Grill is scheduled to open to the public Monday, Oct. 12 in the former Anticoli’s Giuliano Tavern space at 67 S. Main St. in downtown Miamisburg.

“Can’t wait to start the new journey,” Ben Dodson, the new restaurant’s co-founder, wrote on his Facebook page late Monday night. Dodson and co-owner Shawn Dodson had their wedding rehearsal dinner in the same space 22 years ago, when it housed TW’s restaurant.

In a follow-up interview, Ben Dodson said Bennett’s Publical will open with 45 employees. It seats 90 in its dining room, 60 in the bar area and 50 more on a patio. Two separate private-event areas seat 75 downstairs and 60 upstairs.

Dodson served as an original manager of the Fricker’s sports bar on Woodman Drive in Riverside from 1988 to 1995, when he returned to school. Shawn Dodson, who has worked at Geez Grill & Pub in Washington Twp. for 21 years, will oversee the day-to-day operations of Bennett’s Publical with other managers, Ben Dodson said.

“We’ve been looking for the perfect location for 15 to 20 years, and this is it,” Dodson said in July. Dodson’s father, Dr. Verne Dodson, has served the Miamisburg community for nearly 50 years as a family physician.

The “Publical” portion of the new sports grill’s name is a bit of an inside joke — a reference to a code word for “bar” that Dodson said he coined with his friends in his younger years.

Anticoli’s Giuliano Tavern, which opened in 2011, closed its doors on June 7 after 80-year-old owner Leo Anticoli retired.
