New Orleans Family Finds Refuge In Dayton

A local family with ties to New Orleans was determined to find their missing relatives; one of whom was reportedly swept away by floodwaters.

The family calls it a miracle that all of their New Orleans relatives are now headed to Dayton for refuge. The family said they have endured a lot to get out of New Orleans and to get to safety.

One woman took drastic measures to save her children and her parents.

Betty Jean Dyer and her family were among the thousands of stranded victims at the convention center in downtown New Orleans. However, to get there, she said her daughter, Lawanda Ross, risked her life many times over.

Dyer’s family made it out, but there were others living in the same complex who were not as fortunate. She said all of them drowned as floodwaters came crashing in.

Dyer’s husband said it was awful, especially for the children.

The family said they knew that making it to dry ground did not guarantee anything. The conditions were still horrible. She said there was a scent of death all around them.
