13 restaurant openings that have excited the Dayton area in 2017

The Miami Valley has seen numerous restaurant openings this year, with more than 30 creating buzz.

Here are some that gained the most attention.

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, the nation’s largest BBQ chain, opened its first Dayton-area restaurant.

The restaurant is located at 752 Gardner Road, across Ohio 741 from Dorothy Lane Market and the Settler’s Walk retail center in Springboro.

It is the first Dickey’s in the Dayton area, although the Dallas-based chain operates locations in Mason, South Lebanon and Amelia in southwest Ohio and three in central Ohio north of Columbus.

An independent and locally owned Mexican restaurant called Dos Lunas Mexican Bar & Grill has opened its first Dayton-area location.

The new restaurant is located at 12 S. Tippecanoe Drive in Tipp City. It served its first customers last week in a retail center just off West Main Street (Ohio 571) just east of the I-75 interchange.

Duck Donuts

Location: 1200 Brown St., Suite 115

A made-to-order doughnut shop has opened its first Dayton-area location — and more are planned.

Duck Donuts  will have limited hours for the first few days — from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. — and hours are expected to expand starting Monday, Oct. 30, Kellum said.

Duck Donuts serves light vanilla cake donuts that customers can customize by choosing a variety of topping combinations. The stores offer a viewing area where children and adults can watch their donuts being made.

Watermark

Location: 20 S. First St. Miamisburg

Maria and Eric Walusis have opened Watermark at 20 S. First St. in downtown Miamisburg. The pair recently closed their first restaurant, the nearby Nibbles, which opened two years ago. Watermark will offer new American and global cuisine.

What da Pho

Location: 3464 Pentagon Blvd., Beavercreek

Located across the street from the Mall at Fairfield Commons, this family-owned Vietnamese restaurant opened its doors on Jan. 14. Wat Da Pho was founded by the husband-and-wife team of Todd and Trish, who will oversee the restaurant with the help of their family. The 2,000-square-foot facility has a menu that includes soups, noodle dishes, rice dishes, stir-fried lo mein and a wide variety of appetizers.

Location: 1822 Brown St, Dayton

R Taco, a Texas-based chain, opened near the University of Dayton on March 13. The restaurant seats about 80 inside and an additional 25 on the patio.

The new street-style taco restaurant called “R Taco” on Brown Street near the University of Dayton has set an opening date, and is hiring now.

Location: 15 Greene Blvd., Beavercreek

This healthy-alternative restaurant hosted its grand opening on May 18 at The Greene next to Noodles & Co. It seats about 35 and offers grilled chicken served multiple ways, including wraps, salads and burger-type sandwiches.

Location: 6 Oakwood Ave., Dayton, OH 45409

Founded by retired Dayton police officer Bill Parsons, District 6 Donuts opened on June 1. The new donut shop, located in the same complex as Firehouse Subs, offers doughnuts that are made to order. Customers are able to choose their own toppings.

Location: 2727 Fairfield Commons, Beavercreek

The Ohio-based gourmet grilled-cheese restaurant chain opened a restaurant at the Mall at Fairfield Commons on June 12. The 5,000-square-foot restaurant, the region’s first Melt, seats 150 inside and 45 on the patio and employs nearly 70 workers.

Location: 308 E. First St, Dayton

One of downtown’s newest restaurants, Canal Street Arcade & Deli, opened on June 28. It features 27 arcade games, 13 beers on tap, one craft cocktail on tap and another 30 beers in cans or bottles, according to founder Rob Strong.

Location: 895 Miamisburg-Centerville Rd., Washington Twp.

This Louisiana-based restaurant chain opened its first location in the Dayton area on June 28. The restaurant, which seats 92, will offer its customers chicken fingers, crinkle-cut fries, cole slaw, Texas Toast and sauces that are made in-house every day.

The newest addition in the Oregon District, 416 Diner, opened their doors at 416 E Fifth Street on July 7. The diner serves breakfast, lunch and late night options. The late night comfort food, which is served out of the walk-up service window, includes pepperoni rolls, hoagie sandwiches, omelets and burgers.

Mudlick Tap House, originally located in Germantown, opened its doors in downtown Dayton on July 22. The gastropub, located at 135 E 2nd Street, offers its customers made from scratch food within their restaurant that pays tribute to the building’s start as a Ford Model T dealership.
