Xenia Postmaster Jeff Whitehair said, "With the decline of first-class mail, they are just not being utilized like they were at one time."
Whitehair said many people send their bills and messages using the Internet. A study was recently done , and it was discovered that 25 pieces of mail were collected from many of the boxes per day.
According to Whitehair, one of the reasons why some mailboxes were removed was because people were throwing trash in them.
Whitehair said there are still 11 of the old-fashioned blue mailboxes in Xenia. The remaining mailboxes are located in three different locations: outside the post office on West Main Street, neart the Greene County Courthouse, and on Ledbetter Road.
