Current Ohio law requires most districts to implement a minimum pay schedule that is based on years of service and type of degree attained. This type of salary schedule is not fair to Ohio’s great teachers because it is not linked to effective teaching.
I’m a retired substitute teacher and a member of StudentsFirst, and I think we need to make this change to a salary system that provides more dollars to pay great teachers a higher salary. Years ago, my son’s favorite high school teacher quit abruptly after his second year of teaching in Trotwood City Schools because he didn’t make enough money. He had challenged my son in ways I didn’t think was possible and got the best out of him, and I had looked forward to him being in my son’s life for years to come.
His departure is an unfortunate reality, but we need to now make sure the good teachers are not scared away due to low income. — CHARLENE CHATTAMS, DAYTON
Focus should be on criminals, not police
Rest easy America, President Barack Obama has put together an elite “Task force on 21st Century Policing” to deal with the “militarized culture” of our police. Unfortunately, this group is more interested in putting cameras on cops than it is in putting cuffs on thugs.
Congress is being asked for $365M, not to fight crime, but for additional training and reform of our existing street COPS and their methods.
Because a police officer defended himself against a young suspect who tried to grab his weapon and punched him in the face, we are being told that our local police officers are bad guys who wrongfully profile ethnic groups and use inappropriate force in subduing suspects.
The notion in Washington, and wherever the Rev. Al Sharpton is from, is that it is the police who need to be retrained rather than the perpetrators of wrongdoing.
The loss of any human life diminishes us all, but preventing it at the hands of a law enforcement officer is not that complicated. Stop when he or she commands you to, drop anything you are asked to drop, and obviously, do not punch him or her in the face.
Those now calling for our cops to lighten up are the first to want them to show up, armed to the teeth at 2 a.m. when someone is breaking in the back door. — BILL BORDEN, OAKWOOD
Speak up
Everywhere you see racial unrest in this country you will eventually see Al Sharpton. The result is almost always an escalation of unrest and eventually violence. This man is race hustler. He goes by the title of Reverend; if he is, wouldn’t you think that his primary purpose in life would be the spreading of the good news of the infinite grace of God?
To those of you with concerns about the environment and wonder why I’m reluctant to get on board, let me explain. Al Gore got rich telling you the oceans would rise and then bought an ocean side mansion. Patrick Moore left Green Peace because it had been overrun by radical’s intent on using environmentalism as a ruse to damage capitalism. Politicians who push this routinely lie. They say there is a war on women, racism is rampant, voter suppression, and no scandals plague the administration, Obamacare. They have cried wolf so much, I’m not listening.
