Pentagon Considers Closure Of Springfield Air Base

NewsCenter 7

has learned the Springfield Air National Guard Base may soon be on the Pentagon's list of base closures.

The information comes from a Miami Valley congressman who expects the base may be targeted in an upcoming round of military base closures.

Hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars are in jeopardy at the base in Springfield. Rep. Dave Hobson said a lot of money was spent getting the base to Springfield and then now it appears it might be closing.

Hobson and community leaders are fighting back. Retired General Dennis Samic was among a few hundred people at a summit meeting updating Ohio Gov. Bob Taft on base closures.

The Pentagon is just not targeting the base in Springfield and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base many other cities are trying to protect their military facilities. Taft is promising to take Ohio's case to the President George W. Bush if necessary.

The Springfield base has been on the Pentagon's list twice before and survived. The base has the potential to gain jobs in the future if it survives another round of closures.

The Pentagon's list is expected to be announced in mid-May. Wright-Patterson Air Force Base has been considered in the past, but it is not considered to be a target during this round of closures.

A final decision on base closures is expected to come in September.
