In the wake of the Samuel Littleton manhunt, perhaps the biggest case of Kunze's career, he suddenly announced his retirement from the force Friday afternoon before facing an investigation.
Kunze was reportedly under investigation by the city for allegedly making dishonest statements to city administration during the investigation of Tiffany Brown's death and the manhunt for killer Samuel Littleton.
Mayor Adam Brannon confirmed that Kunze had decided to end his career with the Bellefontaine Police Department after more than three decades.
Mayor Brannon would not comment on the investigation, saying only that Kunze resigned and Lt. Ron Brit has been appointed as the acting chief.
Brannon added the city does not expect to comment further on Kunze's resignation.
