Pregnant Woman Speaks About Weekend Shooting

Police said an 18-year-old man is in jail, charged with shooting his pregnant girlfriend in the head. The Kettering woman survived the shooting.

Kettering police received a 911 call Saturday around 10:30 p.m. on a report of a woman shot in the back of the head. On Monday, the woman spoke with NewsCenter 7’s Caryn Golden about what happened.

April Thompson, 23, said she knows she is lucky to be alive. Police said the bullet grazed the back of her head.

Thompson said this was the second time her boyfriend, 18-year-old Dontay Harris, tried to shoot her during an argument over their breakup at their apartment in Kettering Saturday night.

Thompson said despite the blood all over her head, she was able to call 911. Thompson said she was frantic and could not believe that he'd shot her.

Police said Harris took off, but police in Dayton were able to catch up with him on Sunday afternoon during a traffic stoop near Wabash and Norman avenues.

Officers said he was arrested on charges of felonious assault and was booked into the Montgomery County Jail.

Thompson said she hopes Harris stays behind bars. She said, “I am five months pregnant. If he gets out, I don’t know what I’ll do.”
