Rockford man sentenced to prison in death of girlfriend

A man who pleaded guilty to a charge of murder in connection to the shooting death of his then-girlfriend has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.

Daniel Charles Martin, 40, appeared in court today for his sentencing in the death of Melinda Shinn, who was killed in the mobile home they shared in Rockford. He was also sentenced to three years in prison on a weapons specification.

Martin told Shinn’s family he was sorry.

He was arrested in Fort Wayne several weeks after the shooting and returned to Ohio to stand trial two days later.
