The opportunity to expand arose after a yogurt store next door closed its doors late last year, around the time Subway was at its limits as far as what it could achieve in sales, Reedy said.
“We would do like 100 sandwiches an hour during the lunch period and you’re sitting there eating and you’ve got people standing all around you waiting in line, trying to find a place to line up,” he said.
The expansion not only created more space in the lobby area, it created four new jobs and increased seating at the restaurant from 26 to 70 customers.
“It made a big, big difference and just improved our traffic flow,” he said.
The expansion also added a new ice tea island, increased the amount of restrooms and extended a sandwich unit from 10 feet to 17 feet long, giving the restaurant the ability to put more employees on the sandwich line, if needed, Reedy said.
This Sunday, the Roosevelt Boulevard location will celebrate its expansion by offering a $1.99 customer appreciation special that will include a 6-inch regular Fresh Fit value meal, which comes with a sandwich and a small beverage, plus a choice of potato chips or two cookies.
Jenny Kerr of Middletown, a Subway customer for the past 10 years, said she stops by the Roosevelt Boulevard location for lunch about twice a week. The restaurant’s expansion is a much appreciated change, she said.
“The seating is better and there’s just plenty of room,” Kerr said. “I wondered why it didn’t happen long before this.”
