Scholarship established in memory of Lakota teacher

Staff Report

WEST CHESTER TWP. — The Community Foundation of West Chester/Liberty has announced the establishment of the Karen Moeller Scholarship Fund.

Moeller was a teacher for more than 30 years, spending 18 of those with Lakota Local Schools teaching at Adena and Shawnee elementaries before her battle with brain cancer forced her to retire.

After her death in 2011, family and friends established a scholarship fund as a tribute to Moeller’s work in Lakota Schools and her love of furthering the education of area young people, said Melissa Benedict, vice president of donor services for the foundation.

The scholarship, which will be awarded annually to seniors from Lakota West and /or East High Schools, will be based on the applicants’ academics and contributions to Lakota, and his and her community, Benedict said.

This year, two $1,500 scholarships will be awarded, she said.

Applications are due March 30, and can be found online at www.wclfoundation.com.
