Services set for Centerville junior in Miamisburg train death

Services for the 16-year-old Centerville High School junior who died from being struck by a train Friday night in Miamisburg have been set.

A memorial gathering for Joseph Fernandez of Miamisburg will take place from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, at Routsong Funeral Home, 81 N. Main St., Centerville.

The pedestrian was killed when he was struck by a Norfolk & Southern train just after 7:40 p.m. Friday on the railroad tracks between East Linden and East Central avenues, authorities said. Police said the death is not believed to be a suicide.

Grief counselors are on hand today at Centerville High School, where the teen had recently joined the wrestling team, according to his obituary.

A native of Huntington, N.Y., he enjoyed – among other things — going on family vacations to Florida, North Carolina and New York, according to his obituary.
