Shelby County Sheriff Dean Kimpel was arrested Wednesday morning on a charge of sexual battery by deputies on his own staff.
Sheriff Kimpel was escorted from the Shelby County Jail to the Auglaize County Jail by deputies from that county.
Investigators said the charge involves allegations made against him by a female deputy.
A video bond hearing took place in Auglaize County Common Pleas Court within the hour and a judge set bond for Kimpel at 10 percent of $100,000 dollars.
Kimpel has been under fire for more than a year, since Deputy Jodi Van Fossen claimed he sexually assaulted her in July of 2010.
Van Fossen said she was under the influence of prescription drugs and alcohol when Sheriff Kimpel came to her Wapakoneta area home and had sex with her after she blacked out.
Sheriff Kimpel denied any sexual contact with Van Fossen, who filed a criminal complaint against him in late January of this year.
In February, about a dozen residents of Shelby County called for Kimpel's resignation. Members of a group called "Citizens for Accountability, crowded the Shelby County Commission meeting and asked commissioners to sign a petition to recall Kimpel.
"I'm embarrassed to say I live here and I used to be proud," said Gwen Vanderlaan, a spokesperson for the citizen's group.
However, commissioners refused to sign the petition and said they were going to wait on the legal system to handle the issue.
Even though his own political party called for Kimpel to resign, he has refused to stop down. He has also refused any interviews about the allegations against him.
If convicted, Kimpel faces up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
