Sidney officers struck by suspected impaired driver

A Sidney police officer and his K-9 partner were injured after the police cruiser was struck by a wrong-way driver.

Sidney police Chief William Balling said Tuesday that around 1:55 a.m. Sunday, Officer Robbins and K-9 officer Duke were patrolling on Ohio 47 traveling west when a vehicle traveling east in the westbound lanes collided with the front of the police cruiser.

Dash camera footage from the cruiser shows the moments before impact.

“The vehicle struck Officer Robbins car causing several air bags to deploy,” Balling said in a release. “The accident caused serious damage to both vehicles. Officer Robbins and Duke received minor injuries, but appear to be okay at this time.”

The driver of the oncoming vehicle, Dane Rike, was evaluated at the scene by Sidney Fire but refused all medical treatment. Dane Rike was charged with operating a vehicle while under the influence, obstructing justice, and resisting arrest.

Rike appeared in Sidney Municipal Court Monday for his initial appearance.

Balling said that so far in 2016, 13 officers have been killed in traffic-related accidents.

“This was a very serious accident and reminds us how important it is to be careful while patrolling and doing our sworn duty,” Balling said in a release. “I am very thankful that all of the parties involved were not seriously injured.”
