Staples to close local store in September

The Staples office-supply store at 1927 Dorothy Lane in Moraine will shut down permanently on Sept. 12.

“We continually evaluate our store performance to ensure we’re operating the business in the best way,” Staples spokeswoman Kaitlyn Reardon said in confirming the store closing. “As customers shift online, we are taking aggressive action to right-size our retail footprint.”

Staples customers “can continue to shop with us at our Centerville location” at 6254 Wilmington Pike just south of WalMart, or online at Staples.com, Reardon said.

Pending Federal Trade Commission approval, Staples is in the process of buying out its one-time rival, Office Depot, as both chains have been hammered by competition from online retailers and by technological changes in the workplace.

Nationwide, Staples has closed dozens of stores in preparation for the merger, and by the end of the year, it expects to have shuttered up to 225, according to the Associated Press. Office Depot has said it expects to close up to 135 stores by the end of 2015.
