Stony Hollow landfill violations date back to ‘15

UPDATE @ 1:12 p.m. (June 8)

A Dayton landfill’s wells have been found in violation by the Regional Air Pollution Control Agency.

The agency said several wells at the landfill have been “operating various wells in violation” of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requirements, according to a June 2 letter.

The letter comes as Stony Hollow is digging a series of new wells whose installation has caused odors which have led to dozens of complaints by residents of neighboring communities.

The letter by RAPCA Administrator Jennifer Marsee indicates Stony Hollow’s violations date back to May 2015.

FIRST REPORT (June 7)

Odors coming from the Stony Hollow Landfill are drawing complaints, according to the city of Moraine.

All complaints about the landfill at 2460 S. Gettysburg Road are being reported to the Regional Air Pollution Control and the Environmental Protection Agency, according to the city of Moraine website.

The landfill is owned by Waste Management.

The odor is a result of Stony Hollow digging 15 feet deep by 20 feet wide ditches, which exposed degrading trash to the environment, according to the city’s website.

Stony Hollow has completed this process and will be placing three-foot-wide wells in the landfill to collect methane gas. The wells will be covered in the evening, according to the city.

A hotline has been established regarding the odors. That number is 937-356-6203.
