Surveyor’s vehicle sparks field fire in Troy

Three fire departments helped Troy firefighters put out a field fire that consumed dozens of acres of a harvested corn field.

Fire was sparked in several areas in a field near the corner of Wilson and Fenner roads around 1 p.m.

The fire started by a surveyor’s vehicle, according to Troy Fire Platoon Commander Don Pemberton.

The surveyor, hired by the farmer to do the work, drove across the field and some fluid was either dripping from the vehicle or something was dragging, Pemberton said.

No one was hurt, but the fire covered an area of 50 to 70 acres of mostly “corn stubble,” Pemberton said.

Dry conditions and the wind enabled the flames to spread fast, he said.

Firefighters from Pleasant Hill, West Milton and Ludlow Falls responded to provide mutual aid.
