Suspect in Jeff Wellington shooting death arrested

The teen wanted in the fatal shooting of Jeff Wellington in Springfield Easter morning has been arrested.

Tyrin Hawkins, 17, was taken into custody by the Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team in Dayton Thursday morning, according to Springfield police Chief Stephen Moody. Hawkins was arrested without incident at the King's Court apartment complex after investigators pieced together tips and other information, according to a release.

U.S. Marshals and police have been searching for Hawkins since he was named a suspect in the shooting that occurred outside the Coventry Village Apartments on North Limestone Street.

Wellington, a standout high school athlete, was reportedly trying to resolve a dispute involving several people when he was shot to death, police have said. He was a junior at Springfield High School, where he was a standout running back on the football team.

"We want to thank the Springfield Police Division and the U.S. Marshals for their work on this case," said Springfield City School District Superintendent David Estrop. "The Springfield City School District will continue to cooperate with law enforcement and the courts as this case moves through the judicial process."
