The ex-Phillipsburg police officer who went by the Kik Messenger name “Slick Johnson” didn’t pay two prostitutes he had sex with at a Vandalia hotel, according to testimony Monday during Justin Sanderson’s trial.

Sanderson, 33, had been indicted on 21 counts, including seven for sexual battery, four for interfering with civil rights, three for rape, two each for gross sexual imposition, kidnapping and unauthorized use of the Ohio law enforcement gateway system and one for aggravated burglary. Two counts were dismissed by prosecutors on Monday, so Sanderson is being tried on 19 counts.

The alleged crimes happened against four women during three incidents in May and June 2017. Two counts were dismissed before Monday’s bench trial began in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court Judge Steven Dankof’s courtroom.

When he didn’t pay the $160 or $180 for a half-hour with two women, one testified that she asked, “I said is it a get-out-of-jail free card? He said, ‘kind of.’”

Sanderson, who had texted a photo of his face via the Kik app, allegedly had oral sex and intercourse with both women during his second visit to the Knights Inn hotel room.

Earlier, Sanderson got a master key from the front desk — an employee said he was scared not to comply because the officer put his handcuffs on the desk — and entered the room.

The women — whose names the Dayton Daily News isn’t using because they are possible sex crime victims — both said Sanderson asked them if they had pimps and that he was investigating possible human trafficking. The women said they told him they didn’t have pimps.

The women also testified that Sanderson made them flip up their dresses as part of a search, ran his fingers around one of the women’s see-through underwear and later handcuffed both women. One woman said Sanderson said he liked to be “in control.”

The second woman who testified Monday said Sanderson told them that the officer said he would let them off if they did two things — taking their ads off backpage.com and show him their breasts, which they did. One woman said she feared if she didn’t comply that they may be taken to jail.

After leaving the room for five minutes or less, Sanderson knocked on the door and “asked if we wanted to have fun off the record,” according to the second woman to testify.

They both said they felt they had to comply because Sanderson had a gun and Taser and/or that they may go to jail.

The women testified about having sex with the officer before he said he had to leave because he had been gone too long from work.

Under cross examination, the first woman testified that she acted like she was fine with what happened but that Sanderson was in control.

After Sanderson left, both women said they were unsure if Sanderson was a real police officer. The first woman testified she kept a condom she believed he used that ended up at the Vandalia police station, “In case he was a cop, I knew it was wrong, what he did.”

The second woman said she contacted “Slick Johnson” via Kik the day after the incident and later under the guise of having more sex to find out who he was. Text messages were shown in court that Sanderson replied that his actions were “covert” and that “I’ve told you enough for your safety.”

The judge ordered no audio or visual recording of any of four possible victims’ testimony. The trial resumed this morning with cross examination of the second woman.
