President Donald Trump shared a cryptic message via his Twitter account shortly after the U.S. House of Representatives announced his impeachment.

About 11 p.m. Wednesday, the president posted his first tweet, which was interpreted by many as his response to the decision by the House to impeach on two counts: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

The tweet was a black-and-white photo of himself scowling and pointing toward the camera with the words: “In reality they’re not after me they’re after you I’m just in the way.”

Some interpreted the tweet to mean the impeachment was against the American people, not him.

Others acknowledged the tweet as a message that the efforts by Democrats in the House were futile.

The following messages were retweets of individuals defending him and a few pointed tweets aimed at Democrats and supporters of Wednesday’s votes, which were 230 to 197 for abuse of power, and 229 to 198 for obstruction of Congress.

The president also directed his dissatisfaction with the decision at specific members of the House, including Rep. Rashida Tlaib, and insinuated she should not have been celebrating the vote.

Later Thursday morning, Trump flatly called the impeachment a “hoax” orchestrated by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.
